So, I finally got around to watching Netflix new Horror feature “Veronica” and honesty...loved it!
I tried to stay away from all the hyped reviews but when literally every page, media website and blog is telling you how “truly terrifying” this movie is,it’s hard to keep a neutral expectation, however I did my best to go in with a clear mind “forget the hype” I kept telling myself, turned off the lights, took a deep breath and.....
“Fuck me this is some scary shit!”
This story follows a teenage girl “Veronica” (played by brand new actress Sandra Escacena) who lives with her overworked mother (Ana Torrent) her two younger sisters and her little brother.
Due to the departure of Veronica’s father and her mothers unsociable work schedule, Veronica finds herself filling in the role of parent for her younger siblings however the lack of any authority figure takes its toll on Veronica so (with the help of two naive friends and a ouija board) she decides to get in contact with her deceased father...and that’s when shit goes down!
Now the plot may seem simplistic and somewhat familiar but with everything that happens during, I can see how an over complicated story could be a distraction from the all the creepy fun, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the creators intentions...not to mention this was based on actual events so obviously that would’ve had a great influence on the plot as well as making the whole ten times scarier!
The Scary shit!
I wasn’t going to be deterred about the fact that this movie was all in Spanish I’ve seen enough Hideo Nakata movies to know that watching a horror movie in another language doesn’t mean shit in terms of fear factor! (the fact that our eyes are glued to the screens to read the subtitles can only really heighten the experience if anything...)
As well as a great score and soundtrack(they manage to use a 1970s tv show score to build the suspense in on of the more gripping scenes, which was pure genius) what really stood out were the shots, the long slow pans, the back and forth single shot bag scene thing they did, to the out of focus close ups...all the scenes felt like they were used to their full potential to successfully paint a terrifying picture or to simply lure you in to a false sense of security before scary the living crap out of you!
I wont go in to the actual horror scenes as I feel it'll be too much of a spoiler and would ruin alot of the fun but I will say that if your looking for a nail biter this will not disappoint.
All in all I loved every moment of it, each scene made me want to watch more and turn away at the same time, the child actors were amazing (what is it with foreign kids and kick ass acting?..) the suspenseful scenes did not disappoint and I love the soundtrack!
I wouldn’t say it’s the scariest movie I’ve ever seen but I can sure as hell see how it would be for others.
